Norma Da La Bienvenida a Los Retos
Cambió su trayectoria de carrera para poder sobrevivir en un país extrajero y sigue perseverando para realizar sus metas.
Norma Guaman, emigró a Estados Unidos en el 2008, desde su país natal Ecuador. Aunque no tenía familiares en el país, a Norma no le faltó motivación para luchar por sus metas. Con la ayuda de amigos pudo seguir adelante. Como madre soltera relata que la vida no ha sido fácil para ella pero rendirse nunca fue una opción.
“He trabajado duro para sacar a mis hijos adelante,” agrega.
Cuando llegó a Estados Unidos Norma tuvo que acoplarse a un estilo de vida totalmente diferente. En su tierra natal, Norma tenía profesión de carpintera. Al llegar a los Estados Unidos, aprender inglés se convirtió en un reto que le impedía ejercer en su oficio.
“En este país empecé a trabajar como manicurista donde tenía que relacionarme más con las mujeres. Es algo a lo que yo no estaba acostumbrada.”
Aunque no conocía mucho de su nuevo oficio ella siguió perseverando para alcanzar sus sueño de ofrecerle a su familia seguridad financiera.
“Todo ha sido un sacrificio,” comenta Norma.
“No fue fácil sacar las licencias de cosmetología y barbería al igual que la de manicurista.” comparte.
La antigua jefa de Norma sirvió como inspiración para ella. Fue su ex-jefa la que le enseñó a cortar el cabello y a hacer las uñas. Ella también la apoyó para sacar las licencias.
“Si ella puede, yo también puedo,” comparte Norma haberse dicho muchas veces para motivarse y seguir adelante con sus metas.
Norma escuchó de Grameen America por una compañera de trabajo. Al principio, ella se negó a las invitaciones que recibía por parte de su compañera.
“Yo pensaba qué si estaba ganando mi dinero por que iba a querer un préstamo?” explica Norma.
Con el tiempo, se dio la oportunidad de probar su suerte y hoy en día Norma afirma que el apoyo de Grameen America le ha abierto muchas puertas. “Con un crédito se me ha hecho más fácil poder rentar un apartamento. También cuento con un salón de belleza y una barbería que apenas abri,”
En el 2022 el salón de belleza de Norma fue afectado por un incendio.
“Con el préstamo que obtuvo pude volver a renovar mi salón. El negocio me ha servido para apoyar a mi familia.”
Navegando el sistema de salud
Como cultora de belleza, para Norma su imagen era de suma importancia pero más importante aún, Norma admite que su salud la preocupaba. Para mejorar su salud y apariencia, se puso la meta de bajar de peso pero antes de poder concentrarse en esto, Norma necesitaba ayuda manejando el sistema de salud.
“El sistema de salud es un poco complicado. La mayoría de mujeres que no cuentan con un seguro médico no pueden realizarse sus chequeos médicos.” comenta Norma.
Norma tomó la oportunidad que le ofrecía Grameen PrimaCare y hoy en día es miembro de Grameen Promotoras. Los servicios de las Promotoras la han ayudado bastante.
“Ahora Grameen Promotoras cuida de mi salud,” afirma Norma.
El programa la ayudó con referidos médicos, la han llamado para darle seguimiento, y están pendiente de preguntar cómo le fue en su citas médicas.
“He recomendado los servicios de Grameen Promotoras a mis otras compañeras del centro para que ellas puedan compartir la facilidad de obtener un servicio médico a bajo costo y en nuestro idioma.”
Logrando metas mientras se establecen otras
Después de recibir los servicios de Grameen Promotoras, Norma ahora goza de ser una paciente establecida en una clínica comunitaria y ha podido lograr algunas metas.
“He logrado perder peso,” afirma Norma mientras habla de sus fotos de su antes y después.
Los exámenes médicos que pudo hacerse gracias a su cita con un doctor primario ayudaron a Norma a conocer más sobre su salud. Al ser diagnosticada con colesterol alto, ella pudo hacer cambios en su estilo de vida.
“Mis números de colesterol han bajado,” dice con satisfacción.
Norma no solo se esfuerza por seguir trabajando en sus metas de salud sino también en las que tiene para su negocio y para su vida personal.
“ Si Grameen America me sigue apoyando con incrementos, en un futuro quisiera abrir otra barbería. Seguiré trabajando y algún día espero poder viajar por el mundo", comenta.
“Esta vida no es nada fácil pero pienso que así es mejor. Si algo es difícil y logras superarlo, lo disfrutas mejor. Puedes decir ‘lo logre’.”
“Este país es para todos , la cuestión es echarle ganas y trabajar duro para poder ver los frutos.”
Norma hoy no solo es un orgulloso reflejo de su carrera como cultora de belleza, sino también de una mujer que hizo muchos sacrificios y dio la bienvenida a las dificultades ya que con valentía desafiaba a los retos para nunca rendirse.
Norma Welcomes Challenges
She changed her career path to survive in a foreign country and continues to persevere to achieve her goals.
Norma Guaman immigrated to the United States in 2008 from her native Ecuador. Although she had no family in the country, Norma did not lack motivation to fight to achieve her goals. With the help of friends she was able to move forward. As a single mother, she says that life has not been easy for her but giving up was never an option.
“I have worked hard to raise my children,” she adds.
When she arrived in the United States, Norma had to adjust to a totally different lifestyle. In her homeland, Norma was a carpenter by profession. Upon arriving in the United States, learning English became a challenge that prevented her from practicing her trade.
“In this country I started working as a manicurist and I had to interact more with women. It's something I wasn't used to."
Although she did not know much about her trade, she continued to persevere to achieve her dream of offering her family financial security.
“Everything has been a sacrifice,” says Norma.
“It was not easy to get the cosmetology and barber licenses as well as the manicurist license,” she shared.
Norma's former boss served as an inspiration for her. It was her ex-boss who taught her how to cut hair and do nails. She also supported Norma in getting the licenses.
“If she can do it, I can do it too,” Norma shares, telling herself many times to feel motivated and continue pursuing her goals.
Norma heard about Grameen America from a co-worker. At first, she refused the invitations she received from her co-worker.
"I thought that if I was earning my money, why would I want a loan?" Norma explains.
With time, she gave herself the opportunity to try her luck and today Norma says that Grameen America's support has opened many doors for her. “With a credit score it has been easier for me to be able to rent an apartment. I also have a beauty salon and a barbershop that I opened.”
In 2022, Norma's beauty salon was affected by a fire.
“With the loan I obtained, I was able to renovate my salon again. The business has helped me to support my family.”
Navigating the healthcare system
As a beauty culturist, Norma’s image is of utmost importance but more importantly, Norma admits that her health worried her. To improve her health and appearance, she set out to lose weight but before she could focus on this, Norma needed help managing the healthcare system.
“The health system is a bit complicated. Most women who don't have health insurance can't get their medical checkups,” Norma comments.
Norma took the opportunity that Grameen PrimaCare offered her and today she is a member of Grameen Promotoras. The services of the Promotoras have helped her a lot.
“Now Grameen Promotoras takes care of my health,” says Norma.
The program helped her with medical referrals, they have called her to follow up, and they are always asking how her medical appointments go.
“I have recommended the services of Grameen Promotoras to my other colleagues at the center so that they can share the ease of obtaining a medical service at low cost and in our language.”
Achieving goals while setting others
After receiving services from Grameen Promotoras, Norma now enjoys being an established patient at a community clinic and has been able to achieve some goals.
“I've managed to lose weight,” Norma says as she talks about her before and after photos.
The medical exams that she was able to have thanks to her appointment with a primary doctor helped Norma learn more about her health. When she was diagnosed with high cholesterol, she was able to make lifestyle changes.
“My cholesterol numbers are down,” she says with satisfaction.
Norma not only strives to continue working on her health goals but also those she has for her business and personal life.
“If Grameen America continues to support me with loan increments, in the future I would like to open another barbershop. I will keep working and one day I hope to be able to travel the world," she comments.
“This life is not easy at all but I think it is better that way. If something is difficult and you manage to overcome it, you enjoy it better. You can say 'I did it'.”
"This country is for everyone. The point is that you have to apply yourself and work to see the fruits of your labor."
Norma today is not only a proud reflection of her career as a beauty culturist, but also of a woman who made many sacrifices and welcomed difficulties as she braved challenges never to give up.
