Una soñadora que construye su camino: Empresaria, estilista y contratista
Originaria de El Salvador, Doris dejó su amado país hace más de 14 años creyendo en sí misma y confiando en que sus sueños se podían cumplir con mucho esfuerzo y perseverancia.
Doris tiene 46 años de edad, es Salvadoreña y desde que llegó a los EEUU se dedicó a trabajar y conocer la cultura de este país. Mencionó lo difícil que es emigrar a un lugar donde no hablan tu misma lengua, por eso, su primer propósito fue conseguir trabajos donde se hablara más inglés que español.
“Fue muy difícil llegar a este país sin saber nada del idioma”, comentó.
“Batalle bastante, pero era un objetivo que yo me había puesto de no trabajar con personas de mi misma cultura, porque quería cumplir mi meta de aprender inglés ” . Cuanto más expuesta estuviera al idioma inglés, más rápido podría defenderse en el mismo.
Doris tuvo varios trabajos antes de encontrar su pasión por la estética. Fue esta pasión lo que la llevó a estudiar cosmetología donde pudo conocer a mujeres con muchas aspiraciones.
A través de una compañera de estudios, Doris fue recomendada a Grameen America y pudo invertir su primer préstamo en su educación como cosmetóloga. Actualmente tiene su propio salón de belleza y maneja su tiempo como ella lo desea. Aun así, comparte que ha tenido retos.
“ No todo ha sido fácil, existe mucha competencia laboral en esta área”, comenta Doris.
Por este motivo además de abrir su propio salón de belleza, Doris decidió explorar otras opciones de negocios.
“ Decidí invertir en un segundo negocio en el mundo de la construcción junto a mi esposo que ha sido mi compañero en este largo camino.”
Doris disfruta lo que hace día a día y lo gratificante que es tener sus propias empresas.
“Gracias a Grameen America tengo mi propio negocio, tomo decisiones sobre mi tiempo, soy fuente de trabajo para otras personas y es algo que me hace sentir sumamente orgullosa.”
Una oportunidad que no podía dejar pasar.
Aunque Doris obtuvo éxitos laborales a través de los préstamos de Grameen America, habían retos de salud que ella deseaba cumplir.
Doris menciona que estuvo mucho tiempo sintiéndose mal y luchando con su peso. Cada vez que iba al médico le decían que todo el malestar que ella tenía era a causa de su sobrepeso pero Doris percibía que no era solo eso. Había algo más allá del sobrepeso que le sucedía. Sin embargo, Doris comenta que sentía que los médicos no la escuchaban y no entendían lo que ella estaba pasando.
“El doctor lo único que me decía era que yo tenía sobrepeso, a pesar de que le explicaba todo lo que sentía nunca me hicieron examenes de sangre para ver cómo estaba yo de salud, no escuchaba lo que decía y por ese motivo deje de ir al medico y empecé a medicarme yo misma”.
“Cuando Grameen PrimaCare llegó a Charlotte, North Carolina vi una oportunidad que no podía dejar pasar.”
En la primera oportunidad, Doris optó por recibir los servicios de Grameen PrimaCare a través del programa, Grameen Promotoras. Se contactó rápidamente con su promotora, completó su encuesta de salud y fue referida a una clínica comunitaria donde le hicieron examenes de sangre y la pudieron diagnosticar con hígado graso.
“Sentí mucho alivio porque la doctora se dio el tiempo de explicarme detalladamente sobre esta enfermedad.”
Un cambio positivo en mi
Ser referida a una clínica comunitaria no solo ayudó a Doris a encontrar una institución médica donde ella se siente escuchada. Doris también obtuvo la información que necesita para tomar mejores decisiones sobre su salud.
“Estoy consciente en que mejorar mi salud depende totalmente de mi y el esfuerzo que yo haga.”
Ha hecho cambios positivos en su estilo de vida. “Me puse un reto personal, empece hacer ejercicio y alimentarme mejor, gracias a esto he podido bajar 60 lbs”, afirma.
Doris está muy agradecida con Grameen America y Grameen PrimaCare, porque gracias a estas organizaciones ella pudo estudiar, pudo tener su propio negocio y pudo aprender más sobre su bienestar y tomar los pasos necesarios para mejorar su salud. Hoy es una mujer luchadora, empoderada y con mucho futuro por delante.

Originally from El Salvador, Doris left her beloved country more than 14 years ago, believing in herself and trusting that her dreams could be fulfilled with a lot of effort and perseverance.
Doris is a 46 year old Salvadoran woman and since she arrived in the US, she has dedicated herself to working and getting to know the culture of this country. She mentioned how difficult it is to emigrate to a place where they do not speak your same language. Her first goal was to get employment where more English than Spanish was spoken.
“It was very difficult to come to this country without knowing anything about the language,” she said.
“I struggled a lot, but I set a goal for myself that I would not work with people from my same culture because I wanted to fulfill my goal of learning English.” The more exposed she was to the English language, the faster she would be able to defend herself in the same.
Doris worked various jobs before finding her passion for aesthetics. It was this passion that led her to study cosmetology where she was able to meet women with many similar aspirations.
Through a fellow student, Doris was recommended to Grameen America and was able to invest her first loan in her education as a cosmetologist. She currently has her own beauty salon and manages her time as she wishes. Even so, she shares that she has had challenges.
“Not everything has been easy, there is a lot of job competition in this area,” comments Doris.
For this reason, in addition to opening her own beauty salon, Doris decided to explore other business options.
“I decided to invest in a second business in the world of construction with my husband who has been my partner on this long journey.”
Doris enjoys what she does every day and how rewarding it is to have her own businesses.
“Thanks to Grameen America I have my own business. I make decisions about my time, I am a source of work for other people, and it is something that makes me feel extremely proud.”
An opportunity that could not be missed.
Although Doris achieved job success through the Grameen America loans, there were health challenges that she wanted to meet.
Doris mentions that she spent a long time not feeling well and struggling with her weight. Every time she went to the doctor, they told her that all the discomfort she had was due to her being overweight, but Doris had a gut feeling that it was not just that. There was something beyond being overweight that was happening to her. However, Doris comments that she did not feel heard by her doctors and they did not understand what she was going through.
“The only thing the doctor told me was that I was overweight, despite the fact that I explained everything I felt, they never did blood tests to see how my health was, they did not listen to what I said, and for that reason I stopped going to the doctor and I began to medicate myself”.
“When Grameen PrimaCare came to Charlotte, North Carolina, I saw an opportunity I could not pass up.”
At the first opportunity, Doris chose to receive Grameen PrimaCare services through their program, Grameen Promotoras. She quickly contacted her community health worker, completed her health survey, and was referred to a community clinic where she had blood tests and was able to diagnose her with fatty liver.
“I felt a lot of relief because the doctor took the time to explain this disease to me in detail.”
A positive change in me
Being referred to a community clinic not only helped Doris find a medical institution where she feels heard, but she also got the information she needed to make better decisions about her health.
“I am aware that improving my health depends entirely on me and the effort that I make.”
She made positive changes in her lifestyle. “I set myself a personal challenge, I started exercising and eating better, thanks to this I have been able to lose 60 pounds,” she says.
Doris is very grateful to Grameen America and Grameen PrimaCare, because thanks to these organizations she was able to study, have her own business, and was able to learn more about her well-being and take the necessary steps to improve her health. Today she is a fighter, an empowered woman with a great future ahead of her.
