La luz de las estrellas me iluminan a Maria a seguir adelante aunque su corazón late de dolor
Maria Guadalupe Villalobos Romero de 64 años de edad nació en México distrito federal. Emigró en 1998 a los Estados Unidos acompañada de su pareja. Cuando emigró fue muy difícil para Maria empezar una nueva vida.
“No tenía familia aquí en los Estados Unidos”, comenta.
Se sentía sola. No sabía donde acudir para recibir apoyo o recursos en su idioma. Para sobrevivir, Maria tomó diferentes trabajos.
“Trabaje mucho tiempo teniendo doble trabajo en una bakery donde tenía que levantarse muy temprano,y llegué a tener quemaduras mientras cocinaba los sandwich. Fui niñera donde tenía mucha responsabilidad. También fui vendedora de comida”.
Sin recursos a su disposición y con ganas de prosperar, Maria puso en marcha un plan. En el 2016 después de muchos años de pasar por malas experiencias en diferentes trabajos y por tener deseos de obtener estabilidad económica para sostener a su familia, ella se puso la meta de tener su propio negocio. Le nació la idea de vender aparatos electrónicos. Maria una inmigrante sola en los Estados Unidos se sintió motivada por lograr con éxito su negocio.
Una amiga le comentó sobre la oportunidad de estar en el programa de micro préstamos de Grameen America.
“Vi la oportunidad que estaba esperando para crecer y creer en mí misma. No había mucha gente que tenía ese negocio en Grameen America”.
El negocio de vender aparatos electrónicos no era común. Su hijo mayor la ayuda en su negocio. Él tiene conocimiento sobre los aparatos electrónicos.
“Lo que más me gusta de mi negocio es cuando actualizamos a nuestros clientes y les ofrecemos lo más nuevo cada día. Siempre hay modelos más modernos. Si antes no tenían buena resolución,colores nuevos, ahora si lo tienen y hasta con mejor sonido”.
Con su negocio Maria ha podido ampliar su conocimiento sobre los electrónicos.
“No me imaginaba que fueran tan rápido esos cambios en la tecnología”, comenta.
La llegada de Grameen Promotoras
Después de 6 años emprendiendo mediante el programa de micropréstamos de Grameen America, Grameen Promotoras llegó a su centro. Actualmente Maria goza de la oportunidad que se le brindó ya que hoy en día recibe los servicios de una promotora de salud.
“De manera gratuita nos ofrecen talleres de salud e información sobre los recursos que hay en mi comunidad”.
Para Maria resalta el apoyo emocional que ha recibido de parte de su promotora.
“Llegaron a darnos ese soporte emocional”, comenta Maria.
“Grameen Promotora me apoya. Han logrado ayudarme en momentos tan difíciles, como fue el momento de estar de duelo por uno de mis hijos de tan solo 15 años. Mi hijo se adelantó…he pasado muy triste y la promotora me motiva a seguir adelante”.
El duelo ha sido un proceso doloroso para Maria pero mediante las llamadas de su promotora, y sentirse escuchada, Maria poco a poco persevera e intenta cuidar de sí misma. Incluso, Maria en la actualidad se está enfocando más en su salud.
“A través de los talleres que hay en los centros y las consejerías en persona que nos ofrecen he podido aprender de temas importantes como el de la diabetes, hipertensión, colesterol…una de estas condiciones no la tengo en control y me ha mantenido en el hospital últimamente”, cuenta Maria.
Maria aprecia que en Grameen America no solo tiene un programa de micropréstamos que la apoya en su trayectoria hacia un ingreso estable sino que también ahora tiene apoyo para su salud. El enfoque ha pasado a ser sobre su bienestar total.
“Es por eso que estoy muy contenta. Grameen no ofrece sólo para el que quiera emprender su negocio. También hay el apoyo de alguien que te ayude a crear un plan de salud apoyado de recursos gratis que hay en mi comunidad y sobre todo nos dan apoyo emocional”, expresa Maria con gratitud.
“Grameen Promotoras deberían existir y llegar a más personas para que logren ayudarles como yo lo he venido recibiendo. Gracias Promotoras!”.

Maria Guadalupe Villalobos Romero is a 64 year old woman born in the Federal District of Mexico. She immigrated to the United States in 1998 accompanied by her partner. When she emigrated it was very difficult for Maria to start a new life.
“I didn't have family here in the United States,” she says.
She felt alone. She did not know where to turn for support or resources in her language. To survive, Maria took different jobs.
“For a long time I worked double jobs. In a bakery where I had to get up very early, and I got burns while cooking sandwiches and I was a babysitter where I had a lot of responsibility. I was also a food vendor."
With no resources at her disposal and wanting to prosper, Maria put a plan into motion. In 2016, after many years of going through bad experiences in different jobs and wanting to obtain economic stability to support her family, she set the goal of having her own business. She came up with the idea of selling electronics. Maria, a single immigrant in the United States, was motivated to successfully achieve her business.
A friend of hers told her about the opportunity to be in Grameen America's microloan program.
“I saw the opportunity I was waiting for to grow and believe in myself. There weren't many people who had my type of business at Grameen America."
The business of selling electronic devices was not common. Her eldest son helps her in her business. He has knowledge about electronic gadgets.
“What I like most about my business is when we update our clients and offer them the newest things every day. There are always more modern models. If before they didn't have good resolution, new colors, now they do and they even have better sound”.
With her business, Maria has been able to expand her knowledge of electronics.
“I didn't imagine these changes in technology would be so fast,” she says.
The arrival of Grameen Promotoras
After six years of starting a business through Grameen America's microloan program, Grameen Promotoras came to her center. Maria currently enjoys the opportunity that she was given and today she receives the services of a Promotora.
“They offer us health workshops and information about the resources that are in my community for free.”
For Maria, she highlights the emotional support she has received from her Promotora.
“They came to give us emotional support,” says Maria.
“Grameen Promotoras supports me. They have managed to help me in such difficult moments, such as when I was grieving for one of my children who was only 15 years old and passed away. He left ahead… I have been experiencing a very sad time and the Promotora motivates me to keep going.”
Grief has been a painful process for Maria but through the calls of her Promotora, and feeling heard, Maria little by little perseveres and tries to take care of herself. Maria is even currently focusing more on her health.
“Through the workshops provided at the centers and the in-person counseling that they offer us, I have been able to learn about important issues such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol… I haven’t been able to manage one of these conditions very well and it has kept me in the hospital lately,” says Maria.
Maria appreciates that at Grameen America she not only has a microloan program that supports her on her journey to a stable income but she also now has support for her health. The focus has become her total well-being.
“That is why I am very happy. Grameen does not only offer help to those of us who want to start our business. There is also the aid of someone who helps us create a health plan supported by free resources in our community and above all they give us emotional support,” Maria expresses with gratitude.
